Pelicans New Unis Are Underwhelming

When New Orleans released the new logo and color scheme earlier in the year, fans were excited. The tan, dark blue, and red combination received great praise from everyone, including Jrue Holiday, who referred to the color scheme as “dope”. However, the jerseys that were revealed on Thursday are far from that.

A few key aspects stand out.

1) Misuse of the “dope” color scheme.

Let’s admit it. The Pelicans name may not be cool, but the logo is straight up awesome. The color scheme and the intimidating Pelican are exactly what the franchise needed in a logo in order for the new name to stick. Apparently the jerseys didn’t get the memo. The home and away jerseys are mainly just one color with a slight stripe of tan and red on the side, with the Pelicans logo on the shorts. Why? The trio of khaki, red, and navy blue is what made the logo so cool, so why showcase one color and put the others to the side, rather than mix them all together to spice it up? The lack of red really bothers me for some reason.

2) “New Orleans” couldn’t be more conservative

First of all, the choice to put “New Orleans” on the fronts of both jerseys wasn’t the smartest idea. Pelicans on at least one of them would make the jerseys a little different and provide variety. Secondly, the “New Orleans” that they decided on is blander than  dry toast. It takes up more space horizontally than it should, and it takes up less space vertically than is visually pleasing. And, once again, it’s just one color. To add on to that, it looks like it was written in Times New Roman font. Way to go, Pelicans.

3) The away jerseys look eerily similar to the Pacers jerseys

Not only did they absolutely fail to provide any sort of color or design to make it look somewhat interesting, they also created an away jersey that looks almost identical to the Indiana Pacers’ away jersey other than the lettering.

Overall, these jerseys are lame. But that’s just my opinion. The Pelicans went bold with the logo and conservative with the jerseys. Wrong move, NOLA.
