Saints Training Camp ’14 Position Battles: Corner Back

The New Orleans Saints action packed off season has come to a close as the Saints head off to training camp. And while the team will be enjoying the beautiful 60 degree weather at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, no doubt the competition for roster spots is sure to heat up.

The Saints coaching staff has been quoted for saying that every spot on the roster is up for grabs when training camp begins.

“Every spot on the roster is up for grabs.”

Realistically, that isn’t the case. When the first practice of training camp begins on Friday 90 players will be competing for 53 spots.

Hows that for steep competition? While some positions like wide receiver are up for grabs for a few starting spots, others like quarterback, of course, only have backup positions available. It’s always fun to watch it come together and there are always a few surprises. In this post lets take a look at the Saints Corner Back Position.

Total Roster Spots Available:

Spots Open: 1-2 (1 starting position available, additional spots at nickel)

Last season White essentially took Greer’s spot after he went down with an injury and Robinson was on injured reserve, however the depth of the position started to become pretty thin late in the season. When Lewis was sidelined last season due to a concussion received during the Philadelphia Eagles game, it was a combination of Sweeting and Wade to replace him.

With the addition of 2014 second round pick Jean-Baptiste, who will likely start out primarily on special teams, and Bailey, depth is not a problem here. The Saints will have their pick of who they want to lineup alongside Lewis.

Of course young players like Robinson and White will undoubtedly have a lot to prove. Making the final roster outside Lewis, Bailey and Jean-Baptiste, very unpredictable.

This could easily be one of the most interesting battles of training camp.
