Saints To Meet With Former Ram DT Kendall Langford

The 2015 NFL Offseason is underway and the Saints are already beginning the improvement process to correct 2014’s mistakes. Kendall Langford was recently released from a Ram’s squad that contains arguably the most complete, and deepest, defensive line in the NFL.

Langford is a seven year veteran of the NFL playing his career with the Rams and the Dolphins. He is one season removed from the best statistical season of his career. In 2013 he finished with 4 pass deflections, 6 run stuffs, 5 sacks and 49 tackles while with the Rams.

  • The Saints struggled at this position while other teams, like the Rams, were able to succeed with a deep talent pool.

With the successful inaugural season of Aaron Donald, Langford’s days in St. Louis became numbered before the halfway mark of last season.

Langford just turned 29 in January, and will be entering his 8th season, but this does not mean that he doesn’t still have tread on the tires if the Saints choose to extend an offer.

He has yet to miss a game during his seven year career and has shown durability in a position that is very physically demanding.

While not the youngest, or most talented, defensive tackle currently on the free agent market, the 6-6, 313 pound Langford has already received interest from the Saints, Jets and already met with the Lions. With Suh officially hitting the market, the price tag on Langford has surely dropped a bit.

Perhaps the most pressing question for Saints fans would be, is Langford an upgrade over anyone on the roster? In terms of an ability to pressure the interior, Langford is an upgrade over every player we have at the position.

The biggest concern comes with his age. At 29 years old, how many more effective years does he have? There are no indications that Langford’s play had dropped in 2014, but the Rams opted to go with the younger, and more talented pass rusher, in Donald.

If the Saints do bring him on board, he would be another gamble in an offseason where every move the team makes must go perfectly.  However, it is a position that must be addressed if they can bring in a player to a team friendly deal. Langford could be that player.
