The running back position has become increasingly sparse over the last few years. As quarterbacks continue to put up obscene numbers, only a handful of running backs are able to consistently produce. Mark Ingram sits right on the cusp of those backs.
Just like in each of the past couple of seasons, Ingram has the potential to solidify himself as a number one running back for a fantasy team. The departure of Darren Sproles last season and Pierre Thomas before this coming one, Ingram has his chance to finally assert himself in the running back rotation.
Ingram rushed for a career high 964 yards last season on 226 attempts last season. The attempts are good news (and will probably stay that way thanks to the addition of C.J. Spiller), but the yardage per carry (about 4.3) could use some work. The addition of Pro Bowl Center Max Unger and first round draft pick Andrus Peat will hopefully balloon that number to 5.0, a total that would certainly please fantasy owners and Saints fans alike.
I think Ingram ranks right along side Frank Gore and Alfred Morris among the mid teens of running backs. He has a chance to finish the season as a top ten back, but it will be up to him to push himself the extra mile and solidify himself as a key facet to the Saints offense.
