McCown has been “Old Reliable” when it came to the backup quarterback position behind Drew Brees and was given the starting nod agains the Ravens.
You were certain he would lead the Saints on a scoring drive with the veteran presence that head coach Sean Payton values so much.
Well McCown looked anything but the wily veteran and instead like a signal caller who was new to the game.
He seemed frazzled when he came under pressure and completed seven of ten passes for seventy-five yards and one touchdown.
Of course twenty-eight of those yards, as well as the touchdown, came from a lightning fast catch and run by receiver Brandin Cooks.
Third string quarterback Ryan Griffin however came out and put on a show where he was ten for seventeen in passing for 112 yards and one touchdown.
To be fair, Griffin’s touchdown came from a 21-yard catch and run by running back Khiry Robinson.
But the visible difference was that Griffin seemed so much more comfortable in the pocket than McCown did and didn’t seem to get rattled.
It’s not rocket science that the Saints won’t be keeping four quarterbacks at the final round of cuts and third round pick Garrett Grayson won’t be going anywhere.
So if McCown wants to keep the #2 spot he needs to redeem himself this Saturday to hold Griffin at bay.
