New Saints CB Sammy Seamster: A Quick Look

Yesterday during the announcement for the first round of roster cuts, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton announced an addition to the team in cornerback Sammy Seamster (6-0, 205 pounds) who was claimed off waivers from the Miami Dolphins.

Given the breaking news this morning of the injury to starting Saints CB Keenan Lewis (out 4-6 weeks following hip surgery), this move now makes sense, considering the Saints’ sudden run of injuries in the secondary for a 2nd straight year.

Seamster was a 2008 Rivals.com two-star recruit out of Ooltewah High School who during his senior year recorded 53 tackles, a forced fumble, 27 pass breakups, and six interceptions while also competing in basketball and track where he ran a 4.35 40-yard dash.

Starting his college career in 2009 at Middle Tennessee State, he was a big special teams contributor and recorded six tackles with one for a loss along with a forced fumble.

Seamster suffered a knee injury during his freshman year and was out for the rest of that season, leading him to be redshirted for the following 2010-2011 season.

For his sophomore football season in 2011, he played in all 12 games where he received 374 total snaps and recorded 13 total tackles.

In 2012 Seamster made the transition from corner to safety while once again participating in all 12 games and had a total of 17 tackles with two of those for a loss and forced two fumbles.

Seamster moved back to corner for his final year in 2013 which proved to be his best as a Blue Raider and had 33 tackles, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and his first career interception.

Although Seamster wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, he did participate in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl and at his Pro Day he ran a 4.44 40-yard dash and attracted the interest of teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft.

The Baltimore Ravens ended up signing Seamster although he was also courted by the Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars after he went undrafted that year and he had two tackles during the preseason before being released on August 30, 2014.

The Dolphins ended up claiming Seamster off waivers and he played in their first two games of the season before fracturing his collarbone in the second game versus the Buffalo Bills which landed him on injured reserve.

Seamster healed up and played in the Dolphins first three preseason games this year where he had two total tackles and one pass defended.

After being buried on the depth chart with the Dolphins at left corner behind starter Brent Grimes and Jamar Taylor, Seamster was waived this past Sunday before being picked up by the Saints.

After releasing cornerbacks Terrence Frederick and Travis Manning while also placing 2015 third round cornerback P.J. Williams on injured reserve, Seamster has a few days to impress the team before their final preseason game on Thursday against the Green Bay Packers.

Seamster will need to use his special team skills that made him valuable in college as well as beat out veteran Kyle Wilson and Brian Dixon to likely remain on the roster…..
