The Secondary Becomes A Primary Concern

It was a problem last year and I don’t really feel that it’s any better this year especially with the injury situation.

I truly want this area to not be a problem with what should be a bevy of talent at the position but it doesn’t appear to be a reality.

High priced safety Jarius Byrd has been a no-show since the beginning of camp and their are rumors that he could possibly be placed on the PUP list which will keep him out the first six weeks of the season.

But even if Byrd is allowed to heal that long or let’s say he can start Week 1, how effective will be be with the last bit of action he saw was in OTA’s.

Cornerback Keenan Lewis is said to have hip surgery and could be out at least four weeks if not six weeks, which even one week is one too long.

The absence of Lewis means that Delvin Breaux will be asked to man the position with ailing Brandon Browner alleged to be back for their first game against the Arizona Cardinals.

While Breaux has a wonderful comeback story and seems to have the necessary skills at the cornerback position, the level of competition he’ll be facing might be more than he was used to seeing in the preseason.

After Breaux my worry is that there is a serious lack of depth especially at the cornerback spot with Kyle Wilson being the next up if there is another injury and 2014 second-round pick Stanley Jean-Baptitste is so up and down it’s ridiculous.

Jean-Baptiste clearly still isn’t ready to even be a backup with his poor body language, lack of physicality, and tackling that is more questionable than sushi from a gas station…and let’s not even get started about him on special teams.

Head coach Sean Payton said in his post-game presser that the cornerback group “concerned” him last night…he’s not alone.
