Saints 53-Man Roster Moves Are Both Obvious And Curious

Final roster cuts seem to almost be like NFL free agency or the undrafted free agent signing period following a draft…hectic, chaotic, and always in motion.
It’s like ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange or better yet like the gates flying open at a horse race as floods of information concerning players safety or dismissal with a team.
But there is also a calculation to the chaos when it comes to final roster moves as teams try to hold off on giving their transaction lists until they absolutely have to.

A few that are given early usually indicate the team is confident the released player will pass through waivers so they can rejoin the team on the practice squad or that it may not matter to the team if they are claimed since they had no intention of bringing them back.
Of course the New Orleans Saints were one of the above mentioned teams that took their time in releasing their roster moves and Darin Gantt of ProFootballTalk.com said it was because the Saints were “embarrassed” by some of those moves, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
Just like in the draft, the Saints showed that there is no way to nail down what they are thinking and roster cuts just like draft picks are either applauded or met with an exclamatory, “What?!?”
