It’s tough to pick out trends from only one game but watching LSU’s defense on the field against Mississippi one thing was clear: the linebackers are the heart and soul of this years Tigers defense.

LSU’s coaches were very pleased with this group during the offseason program, lauding them for their speed, command of the system, and aggressive play. All of these factors stood out early against the Bulldogs.

Linebackers were flying around, sealing run lanes, pressuring the quarterback, and pursuing every ball carrier to the ground. They held a usually potent Mississippi State rushing attack to 43 total yards.

LSU’s linebackers will have to be on top of things Saturday because in Auburn’s offense Peyton Barber is the straw that stirs the drink. He is averaging over 100 yards a game and 5 yards a carry.

With Auburn’s passing attack struggling they will try to lean on Barber to get the job done, and to keep Leonard Fournette off the field.

LSU struggled with conditioning late against the Bulldogs and they can’t afford to allow Auburn to control the ground game and the clock.

In order for LSU to beat Auburn they will have to contain Peyton Barber.
