The Deal: Saints send Ben Grubbs to chiefs for 5th round pick(154th overall, Tyler Davison)
The Winner: The Saints
Why: Going into the 2015 offseason, many thought the Saints would cut Grubbs for underperforming. When the news came out that they were able to find someone to trade him too, it already felt like a “win” because the Saints were able to save 3.6 million on the cap, but also were able to get a draft pick in return.
The Saints use that 5th round pick on Fresno State DT Tyler Davison. Davison in no way was a star last year, but he played in a rotational role while flashing his potential at times. He finished the year with 18 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
About a year after making this trade, the Chiefs cut Grubbs — which locked this up as a win for the Saints.
The Saints win this trade because they were able to save 3.6 million in cap space, they got a young defensive lineman who they have high hopes for, and Grubbs only lasted a year with the Chiefs.
Final Grade: A
