It’s an astronomical number, far and away the biggest cap hit in NFL history. The Saints have been in proverbial “salary cap jail” for a few years now, and the poorly structured Drew Brees deal is a part of it.
Bad personnel decisions and dead money are the worst culprits, however, the current situation is the height of absurdity.

Drew Brees has repeatedly stated that he wants to finish his career in New Orleans. He is the best quarterback in franchise history, and a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer.
From the Saints perspective he is still producing at an elite level, and he is showing no signs of slowing down.
Last week, ESPN reported that Drew Brees and the Saints hadn’t resumed contract talks in 3 months. This is the height of stupidity, and will only negatively impact the Saints moving forward.
