#1. Positive Vibes

This might seem trivial, but this is actually what the Saints have built their entire philosophy around in their rebuild.

When Sean Payton signed his extension, he said he was confident that there would also be a Drew Brees extension. It was a gesture of faith on the part of Tom Benson and Micky Loomis that the franchise was heading in the correct direction, and that back to back 7-9 seasons would soon be a thing of the past.

Payton has preached repeatedly about valuing character over talent, and he has practiced what he preached.

Kenny Stills was shipped off to Miami, Junior Galette was let go, albeit at a hefty price.

The Saints have carefully groomed a locker room where unity and character, doing things the right way, is an integral part of the Saints DNA. No player embodies this more than Drew Brees.

Even at 37, Drew Brees is still the hear and soul of this team.

He is their unquestioned leader, on and off the field. His work-ethic inspires those around him, and he elevates everyone’s level of play.

Paying Drew Brees to continue this work is the final piece lacking from the organization, the ultimate commitment to the direction of the team saying: “we believe in this, and we support it.”

Once the deal is done, the focus can once again return to football. The Saints, a young team, will have their leader, and will be reassured that he is there to stay.

The seeds of doubt will be quelled, and the roots planted of character, dedication, and teamwork will have a chance to take hold……..
