The LSU Football Tigers had a big prove-it game in Week 2 against the Texas Longhorns and passed the test with flying colors with a victory.

The LSU Football team entered Saturday’s game as the sixth-ranked team in the country and is now the fourth-ranked team in the country after defeating then ninth-ranked Texas, 45-38.

This game was huge for both sides and was the first game of the season that legitimately had National Title implications for both teams. LSU was viewed as a fringe National Title team while Texas certainly could have started the road to making their case with a win over LSU.

While Texas definitely kept up in the game and looked good at times, they did not have enough to get past the Tigers, who just kept pouring it on as the game went on and did not let up. The LSU Football team had a message to prove on Saturday: that they are legitimate National Title contenders.

More from Big Easy Believer

They absolutely proved that.

I know the College Football Playoff discussion can be exhausting, especially after only two weeks of action. However, this win was so impressive for LSU that it is impossible to not look towards the future of what could be.

The most impressive part of LSU’s win, at least to me, was quarterback Joe Burrow. We all know that Burrow is talented but he really proved that on Saturday, going toe-to-toe with Texas and leading the Tigers to the promised land.

Burrow completed 31 of his 39 passes for 471 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. To put that into perspective, this is only the third time since 2000 that LSU had 400 or more passing yards in a game.

The first was in 2000, where Josh Booty and Rohan Davey combined for 485 yards in a blowout win against Western Carolina. The other was in 2001 when Davey put up 528 yards against Alabama.

More times than not, you need a good quarterback to get over that hump and win the National Title. The Tigers don’t have a good quarterback, they have a great quarterback.

Of course, there is still a lot of season left to play but this win was a very impressive win to add to the resume. LSU has to get through the next three weeks, where they have three relatively easy wins, before getting another chance to win a prove-it game against Florida.

If Burrow and the Tigers showed us anything on Saturday it is that they are the superior team to the Florida Gators.

Then it shifts into getting through Auburn and Alabama. LSU proved on Saturday that there absolutely is a reality in which they win all of those games and become a surefire lock to make it to the College Football Playoff.

However, even if they lose one of those games, they had such an impressive win on Saturday that will help make their case, especially if they rack up more impressive wins with Burrow playing as he did on Saturday.

It is way too early to get that optimistic and assume that LSU will be playing for a chance to win the National Title. However, the win over Texas definitely opened the door much farther than it already was.
