Joe Burrow has impressed during his time with the LSU football program and is already laying the foundation to be the school’s best quarterback ever.

Great quarterbacks are not as frequent with the LSU Football program as they are for other schools. While there certainly have been some greats through the school’s history (we will get to them), there is not a staggering amount.

Senior quarterback Joe Burrow is one of the few great quarterbacks that have been under center for the Tigers. Burrow transferred over from Ohio State and earned the starting quarterback job last year, in which he did decent with 2,894 passing yards and a 57.8 percent completion percentage.

So far this year, Burrow has been on fire with a great game against a cupcake opponent in Georgia Southern and then a great game against a ranked opponent in Texas. While Texas is not the best defense in the country, they have some talented guys that Burrow just dozed through.

More from Big Easy Believer

Through two games, Burrow has 749 passing yards, nine touchdowns, just one interception and an 81.8 completion percentage. The most passing yards for an LSU quarterback since 2000 in the first three games of the season is 838 by Rohan Davey in 2001. Burrow, at his current pace, will have 1,123 passing yards after this game.

Tommy Hodson is widely known as the best quarterback in LSU history, mostly for how good he was at the time and the fact that he finished school with the SEC record in passing yards. Times have changed, but Burrow had more passing yards last year than Hodson ever had in a season.

More importantly, though, Burrow has the chance to accomplish something that Hodson never accomplished: winning a National Championship. I know it is way too early to get ahead of ourselves, but this LSU, with Burrow at the helm, is legitimately good enough to win the National Championship.

That will give Burrow something that most quarterbacks in school history don’t have. A National Championship and 3,500 passing yards in one season would immortalize him forever.

LSU only has three National Championships under their belt, which makes winning one that much sweeter. The first came in 1958, so anyone under the age of 60 was not alive for it.

It took LSU 45 years to win another National Championship, which was in 2003. Of course, that year was controversial as the broken BCS system led to both LSU and USC both being recognized as National Champions.

Finally, the third and last title came in 2007, where there was no controversy with a win over Ohio State.

Matt Mauck is considered one of the best LSU quarterbacks of all-time and he is nowhere near as talented as Burrow is, the same can be said for Matthew Flynn.

And while the most talented quarterback we have ever possibly seen in Baton Rouge is JaMarcus Russell, he never reached that mountaintop that Burrow is capable of. Burrow is capable of the rare double-whammy, something that will not only immortalize him but help his NFL career as well.

There is still a long way to go before the National Championship but the LSU Football team has a confident and competent quarterback that is already setting new program bests through a quarter of the season.

If that is a sign of anything then it is a sign of great things to come for Burrow and the LSU Tigers.
