#2. There’s Not an Alternative

When the Colts made the decision to cut bait with Peyton Manning, a lot of people disagreed with it, but it was ruthlessly justifiable.

The Colts owner, Jim Irsay, made a cut-throat move to get rid of Manning in order to draft Andrew Luck, making the argument that this would set up the franchise for success through the next decade.

The Saints have no Andrew Luck.

If they are unable to work out an extension with Drew Brees who is going to play quarterback?The current choices are either Luke McCown or Garrett Grayson.

The Saints drafted Grayson in the third-round as a project player, but it remains to be seen if that investment will pay off. He’s certainly not an Aaron Rodgers-type of QB talent-wise.

Now, its possible that the Saints will draft an heir apparent to Brees in the coming draft, but barring absolute catastrophe, the Saints don’t expect to be picking in the top 10 next year.

In order to a get a “franchise quarterback”, they would have to mortgage future picks in a trade, a la the Rams or the Eagles. This is a huge price to pay, and a gamble that can cripple a team.

Extending Drew Brees would buy the Saints some time to either sign an up and coming free agent quarterback, or to cultivate an understudy quarterback with more upside than Grayson.

Last, but not least, the biggest reason the Saints NEED to extend Drew Brees…
