New Orleans Saints: All the ugly takeaways from loss to Rams
By Jason Reed
1. Drew Brees injury and Teddy Bridgewater’s performance
You knew this one was coming. The biggest takeaway out of anything that happened on Sunday, across the entire NFL, is that Drew Brees suffered a hand injury after being hit by Aaron Donald. This injury led him to miss the rest of the game, giving Teddy Bridgewater a chance to shine.
The obvious concern here is how long this injury is going to last. The Saints have two important games that could have playoff seeding implications in the next two weeks against the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks and losing both of those would be disastrous.
But still, the Saints could absolutely come back from a 1-3 deficit and win the NFC South, but that, of course, gets much harder with Bridgewater at the helm. The NFC South is weak, so they probably will still be fine, but it all depends on how long Brees is out.
The problem here is that Bridgewater did not really look good at all while he was out there. He had some brief flashes of being efficient, but for the most part, the Saints offense stalled without Brees.
This was especially alarming as Bridgewater was brought in to be an over-qualified backup quarterback that could still keep the Saints competitive if Brees went down. He could absolutely do better in the future with a week to practice with the first team but his play was not all that inspiring.
